Develop local scenic locations: Shyam Benegal

Khajuraho (MP) (PTI): Indian filmmakers often flock abroad for outdoor shoots, but the country has better scenic locations -- what needed are more tourist centers, resorts and better communication facilities, say celebrated directors.

"In our country, we have so many tourist destinations, which are far better than foreign avenues. But due to government's soft attitude, they were not being developed fully," critically acclaimed director Shyam Benegal said.

He said government has failed to develop domestic tourist destinations, which form the backbone of tourism industry.

"During shooting of my film 'Welcome to Sajjanpur', I had to create an artificial village as it was hard to find something that met the requirements of a village," said Benegal in the context of developing "rural tourism" in India for positioning the country on world map.

Renowned director of much-acclaimed Hollywood movies 'Elizabeth' (1998) and 'Elizabeth: The Golden Age' (2007), Shekhar Kapur also echoed the similar concerns.

"Many Indian filmmakers go outside to shoot their movies as they do not get the basic facilities here. Worse is the complicated procedure of obtaining permission for shooting which lead to exploring foreign avenues, where there is a single-window system and once you get the permission you can shoot anywhere," Kapur said.
