    Eminent musician Chandavarkar passes away

    Pune (PTI): Eminent music director and Sitarist Bhaskar Chandavarkar died of cancer here early on Sunday morning.

    He was 73.

    A reputed academician who blended Indian classical and Western music in his work, Chandavarkar was a disciple of Pandit Ravi Shankar.

    He rendered music to around 40 films, which included Hindi, Marathi and Malaylam movies. He won acclaim for his innovative music which he composed for the landmark Marathi play "Ghashirman Tendulkar", written by Vijay Tendulkar and directed by Dr Jabbar Patel in the 1970's.

    Known for his academic proficiency, Chandavarkar had taught music at the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) here for 15 years and was a popular teacher with students for his insightful sessions that unfolded the intricate nuances of both Indian classical and western music.

    A recipient of Sangeet Natak academy award in 1988, Chandavarkar also gave music to many off beat movies that included "Aakrit" by Amol Palekar, "Saamna', "Sinhasan". His ot her films include " Thodasa Rumali Ho Jai"," Kairi", "Ravsaheb", Mati Mai".
