Need for farmers to diversify into medicinal plants

Srinagar, Oct. 3 (PTI): There is a need for cultivators to go in for growing medicinal and aromatic plants which are in demand, Aromatic Medicinal Plant Growers Association of India president Thakur Randhir Singh said yesterday.

"I appeal to farmers to diversify into medicinal and aromatic plants because of their demand throughout the world," Thakur said, addressing farmers at Kulgam in south Kashmir.

He said Jammu and Kashmir has got aromatic and medicinal plants and alleged that the state government has not seriously taken up the schemes launched by National Horticulture Board.

India has one of the world's richest medicinal plant heritages with about 8000 species being used by rural communities, he said, adding of this about 880 species are in active trade with 48 being exported and around 42 species being imported.
