Vietnam wins rice tender in Philippines

HANOI (Xinhua): Vietnamese enterprises have won a bid to sell 185,000 tonnes of rice to the Philippines, according to local newspaper Youth on Friday.

Accordingly, 12,500 tonnes of five-percent broken rice priced at 745 U.S. dollars per ton, 12,500 tonnes of 15-percent broken rice at 738 dollars per ton, and 160,000 tonnes of 25-percent broken rice, will be delivered from March to late May.

The country still targets to export 4-4.5 million tonnes of rice in 2008 despite damage to its rice crop by the recent prolonged spell of cold weather in the Northern region.

Vietnam, the world's second biggest rice exporter after Thailand, exported 4.5 million tonnes of rice worth nearly 1.5 billion dollars, mainly to the Philippines, Malaysia, Cuba, Indonesia and Japan, in 2007, down 3.1 percent in volume but up 13. 9 percent in value against 2006, according to the country's General Statistics Office.
