Sugar costlier in Kolkata compared to other metros

New Delhi (PTI): Sugar, the primarily ingredient in most sweet dishes and beverages, is costlier in Kolkata at Rs 16.20 a kg compared to other three metro cities.

Sweetener in the Kolkata physical market was ruling at Rs 16.20 a kg today. Whereas in Delhi, prices stood at Rs 15.55 a kg, in Mumbai at Rs 14.75 a kg and Chennai at 13.90 a kg.

Sugar is expensive in Kolkata because it buys maximum sweeter from Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra, the top two sugar producing states in the country, according to traders.

Incidentally, many sugar companies like Balarampur Chini and Birla Group's Oudh Sugars have offices in Kolkata but their mills are located in UP.

"Because of the long distance the freight charges are normally high and this makes the commodity costlier in Kolkata," Prasoon Mathur of Religare Commodities told PTI.

Total consumption in the country stands at 20 million tons annually.

Sugar production is estimated to be nearly 27 million tons in 2007-08 season as against 28.3 million in a year ago period.
