Tearful Sania retires with wrist injury; doubtful for doubles

Beijing (PTI): An inconsolable Sania Mirza left the court in tears after her singles campaign in Beijing Olympics ended in just 46 minutes with a wrist injury forcing her to retire in the first round at the Olympic Green Tennis Centre here on Monday.

Sania, returned into the game after a three-month lay-off following a wrist surgery, was trailing 1-6 1-2 against Czech Iveta Benesova when she decided to concede the match. The injury also casts a cloud of doubt over her availability for tomorrow's doubles first round match.

The Indian scratch pair of Sania and Sunitha Rao is scheduled to meet French pair of Tatiana Golovin and Pauline Permentier in the opening round here on Tuesday.

"She had a surgery on her right wrist and it was bothering her right from the beginning. She was covering the court well and keeping the ball in play too. But things subsequently became too painful and she had to retire," team coach Nandan Bal said.

Against the left-handed Czech, Sania had a disastrous start as she dropped the first game and could not hold her serve in the third and seventh as well as Benesova, who never lost to Sania in their previous three meetings, wrapped up the first set in 32 minutes.

Sania began the second set with renewed vigour, breaking the Czech in the opening game but Benesova broke back to settle score and held her serve to lead 2-1 when Sania threw in the towel.

Benesova came forward for a few words of consolation for Sania who could not hold back her tears and was seen bitterly weeping before leaving the court with her parents and doubles pro Mahesh Bhupathi accompanying her.
