Indian challenge in tennis ends, it's all but over in shooting
Beijing (PTI): India's woes in the Olympic Games continued on Friday as its campaign in tennis came to an end with the defeat of veteran doubles partners Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi and further medal hopes in shooting are all but over as two more marksmen failed to qualify for the finals.
Paes and Bhupathi were overwhelmed by singles top seed Roger Federrer and his Swiss partner Stanislas Wawrinka who won 6-2, 6-4 in the men's doubles quarterfinal, a grudge match avenging the defeat against the Indian pair in the Athens Olympics in 2004.
In the quarterfinal match spread over two days due to rain interruption last night, it took the silky Swiss pair one hour and 22 minutes to triumph and set up a difficult last four encounter with doubles top seed American twins Bob and Mike Bryan.
Fedderer, smarting under the stunning defeat against James Blake in the singles, teamed up with Wawrinka to unleash his pent-up frustration on Paes and Bhupathi who could only watch the scratch Swiss pair decimating them with clinical precision.
"We just could not figure out what Roger was doing in the court. He proved why he is among the all time greats. Probably, you cannot do much when you have the best player in the world on the other side of the net and with him a player who does not miss anything," Paes said after the match.
Federrer said "it was a sweet revenge. I lost to them with Yves Allegro four years ago in Athens".
He said he had expected the Indians to be tougher but anything can happen in the best-of-three-set doubles.
Rains had interrupted the match with the Indians trailing 1-4 last night and things were hardly any different when the tie resumed on Friday.
Federer played some breathtaking tennis with Wawrinka playing the second fiddle to perfection.
In the first game on Friday, Bhupathi held his serve to narrow the gap but the Swiss hit back soon. Wawrinka too held his serve and then Federer proved why he is considered among the all-time greats as he sealed the set with a backhand half volley.
With their back to the wall, Paes and Bhupathi fought in the second set, hoping to stay afloat. The first nine games went with the serve and the gritty Swiss did not relax even though they were leading 5-4.
The 10th game started on an ominous note for the Indians with Bhupathi's return twice sailing wide and Wawrinka making it 40-15 with a scorcher of a return.
Leander smashed one up front hoping to hang around but even he could not delay the inevitable which ensured the much-vaunted Indian duo return empty handed from the Olympics.
Both Paes and Bhupathi dismissed the notion that they could not recreate the old chemistry on Friday. "There was nothing like that. We felt that right after we landed here," Bhupathi said.
After the euphoria over Abhinav Bindra's success, the shooting range in Beijing held out nothing but disappointment for India as Gagan Narang and Sanjeev Rajput could not cross the qualifying round in 50m Rifle Prone event.
Sanjeev (591) finished 26th and Narang (589) ended up at an unflattering 35th in the 56-shooter field.
