Some 3 mn people visually impaired in Bangladesh
DHAKA (Xinhua): Some 800,000 people are blind while around 3 million others are visually impaired in Bangladesh, leading English newspaper The Daily Star reported Thursday.
This was disclosed at a press conference organized by the country's NGO Child Sight Foundation (CSF) here Wednesday on the eve of the World Sight Day.
This year the theme of the day is "Eyes on the future: fighting vision impairment in later life."
According to a research conducted by the CSF and London-based International Center for Eye Health, 40,000 children in Bangladesh are visually impaired and out of them 12,000 children are impaired due to cataract. These children are able to get back their sight after surgery.
The rest 28,000 visually impaired children can be rehabilitated in the society by integrating them into the mainstream, the speakers said at the press conference.
The Child Sight Foundation is a non-Government and non-profit organization working to eliminate avoidable blindness in Bangladesh.
