Manmohan visits Army museum in Red Fort

New Delhi, July 10 (PTI): The dilapidated Indian National Army museum within the historic Red Fort complex had a surprise visitor today -- Prime Minister Manmohan Singh who expressed concern over its "poor upkeep".

"The Prime Minister walked around the campus and visited the rooms in which INA detainees were kept and the museum where photographs were on display," Prime Minister's media advisor Sanjaya Baru said here.

He said the Prime Minister expressed his concern at the "poor upkeep of the museum and premises".

After taking a round of the places in Salimgarh within the historic premises, the Prime Minister expressed hope that such places of historical importance are brought alive with a mix of display of historical material and lively activity of interest to the general public.

The Prime Minister's Office has been instructed to direct the concerned Ministry to take necessary action, Baru said.

During his visit, Singh was told that the concerned departments were seized of the matter and appropriate action would be taken.

His visit followed reports in the media that the upkeep of the memorial was poor.
