Miss Flabbergast
SHARMILA SUBRAMANIAN of the CMS College won the crown and the sash, after a neck-and-neck race in the "Miss Flabbergast 2002'' inter-college event.
A little over 250 students from 30 colleges in Coimbatore region turned up at the show organised by the Kovai Kalaimagal College of Arts and Science at Narasipuram. Pooja from CBM, TV artiste and holder of the "Miss Flabbergast 2001'' title, crowned the winner amidst much fanfare.
To ensure that as many young people as possible took part in the events and had a chance to win prizes, the organisers had lined up as many as 15 events, ranging from "rangoli'' to "Click Flabbergast''.
In the end, it didn't matter that the college was in a suburban location, for participants and onlookers turned out in good numbers to witness the show and encourage their college-mates in the contesting teams.
On the opening day, the biggest draw was the guest appearance by the inimitable Visu, the popular host of Arattai Arangam. His pithy comments and trade-mark one-liners drew spontaneous laughs, even as they kindled discussion, argument and debate.
There were a number of conventional cult-fest events too: Rangoli, Tamil debate, Pattukku pattu, ads apt, Ek minute, Dumb charades, Best Friends, Mock Press, variety entertainment, orchestra, group dance, solo dance, and fashion parade.
Incidentally, the festival coincided with the sixth College Day celebrations, so it was time to take stock of achievements and chart the course ahead.
Speakers highlighted the advantage of discipline in life, positive attitudes and human values that included respect for elders, especially teachers.
