Clean up, to heal

A simple way to keep oneself healthy is to detoxify and revitalise the body. Noted fitness expert PEG JORDAN explains how and why.

Plants with high concentration of chlorophyll help in purifying the body.
FIRST, detoxify! Clean out the old before you put in the new. It's common sense that works for maintaining the efficiency of many things in life from cars and homes to our bodies. Now, scientific research into the expanding field of longevity or anti-aging medicine reveals that years of toxic overload contribute to the possibility of many chronic illnesses.
When our bodies become host to millions of invisible invaders from our environment, the damage can build up over time, paralyse the immune system and create a prematurely aged cellular reaction. You will look and feel older and more tired. No amount of fresh input will reverse a burdened, toxic system. It's like dumping fresh oil on sludge and wondering why your engine isn't running better!
One of the most overlooked aspects of modern medicine has beenthe traditional healing orientation to detoxification and revitalisation. The concepts were pushed to the outskirts as a left-over from a more traditional age of folk medicine. Medical schools sometimes spend all the time teaching how to treat pathogens with exogenous (outside) sources such as surgery or drugs. But recently, physicians who look at chronic conditions such as excessive fatigue, obesity, allergies and arthritis are recognising that future good health depends on revitalising, detoxifying and rejuvenating our bodies.
Michael Rosenbaum is a respected researcher and author in the field of detoxification. He has been a strong advocate of keeping our insides clean with green power namely, chlorella, a single-celled freshwater green algae that is grown at the equator, where the strongest solar energy on earth is captured in plants with high concentrations of chlorophyll. In fact, chlorella contains the highest concentrations of chlorophyll than any known plant (five times as much as spirulina). It's been hailed as the most powerful detoxifying and purifying agent in nature, and is loaded with vitamins, minerals, protein, dietary fibre, beta-carotene, nucleic acids, iron, iodine, lysine, zinc and all of the essential amino acids. Why do you need to detoxify? Rosenbaum explains that the answer lies in the digestive systems. A toxic-substance-laden bowel may become a serious burden on the strong organs in your body such as the heart, liver, kidneys and lungs. More and more, people are eating poorly and growing more stressed. They're consuming foods containing refined white flour and sugar, milk and high fat dairy products. They're experiencing unprecedented, chronically high levels of stress. And they're not getting enough exercise. All this combines to slow down regular bowel activity. Toxic chemical reactions, putrefaction, excessive flatulence and absorption of toxins through the bowel wall can produce a hazardous environment that may contribute to illness. The bowel becomes like a stagnant sewer, and may contaminate the rest of the body.
This is why daily detoxification is essential for optimal health. When toxins enter into the bowel, liver, brain and other tissues and organs of the body, the aging process can increase and diminish your health and vitality.
You can get rid of these environmental toxins and speed up the transmit time of the bowel by: drinking 8-10 glasses of pure water a day; increasing your intake of whole grains (brown rice, barley, quinoa, millet, bulgar, oatmeal) and adding a power nutrient like chlorella; and taking regular saunas, steam baths, or getting a massage.
When whole grains and fibres like chlorella enter the bowel, they promote normal peristalsis, which is the muscular contraction that moves material through the bowels. When normal movement occurs, there is less chance of toxic material passing through the intestinal villi and being absorbed into the bloodstream. At the same time, there is a stimulation to the growth of health-friendly, aerobic bacteria which help you digest and assimilate the needed nutrients. Finally, exercise on a daily basis will also help improve digestion and assimilation, while toning and keeping your bowel flexible. Another way to detoxify is to actually brush the skin on a regular basis with a soft, natural-fibre brush, since the skin is actually another organ of elimination. If you are taking saunas, exercising, and eating more fibre, then you will need to also brush the skin gently to keep this essential flow of toxins out of the body. Body brushing will stimulate circulation, helping to eliminate toxins through the kidneys, as well.
It is possible to practice this first rule of natural medicine clean up to heal up and find yourself in better shape this year, mentally, physically, and emotionally. Website: www.pegiordan.com
