A Film

TREKKING along the Gori, writer and filmmaker Manju Kak saw once prosperous villages on the Salt Route reduced to ruins. In its heyday, many prosperous tribes like the Bhotias had lived in the area. But the Chinese invasion of 1962 brought it to an abrupt halt and left many in dire poverty. Moved by the experience, Kak decided to make a film on the Bhotias. "They Who Walked the Mountains" explores the paradoxical situation where one generation created much wealth from limited resources while another is totally dependent on government doles.
