Miracle milestones

MILESTONES ... they are a way of reflecting back upon our lives, our past, yet they are a marker for setting goals to the future. When I was diagnosed with cancer in December of 1994, I cautiously set a few milestones to keep me motivated toward my future: I wanted to live each and every year to reach my five-year "survivor" anniversary, and I wanted to see my two young boys (who were 10 and eight at the time) graduate from high school.

This past summer I saw my oldest son, Tim graduate and in September 2002 I proudly watched him start at college. Half of one milestone has been accomplished. Brooks is now a sophomore in high school. I reached my five-year anniversary back in 1999, and in December 2002 became an eight-year cancer survivor. I've redefined this milestone and plan to be writing to all of you two years from now with the announcement of my 10-year anniversary!

Milestones happen every day, every month, every year as we witness and accomplish things we never thought would happen when we were told "you have cancer". My husband, John, and I celebrated our 27th wedding anniversary. We took our first trip to Europe to celebrate my only sister's marriage in the beautiful city of Florence, Italy. I shot my career round in golf last August playing with my husband and two of my best friends.

What are your milestones and how many have you witnessed since you were diagnosed with cancer? Take the time, make the time, to savour your past, treasure the present, reflect toward your future. I hope that this month you will accomplish one of your greatest milestones. Have a memorable year and celebrate the beauty and joy of family and friends, location and memory, love and future. And, oh, by the way, don't forget to laugh!{trade}
