Writings on Lahore

FOR someone who frequently travels all over the cities of the world there would naturally be something good in each one. Author BAPSI SIDHWA, on a recent tour of India to promote an anthology edited by her on the writings of Lahore, said she jumped at the idea because "Lahore is a city with a great cultural past a great heritage. This is the city, which gave us poets like Bulle Shah, Faiz Ahmed Faiz and many others their literary voice. It is also a city where I grew up and have an emotional attachment to and I felt that the world should know about it." While the anthology has a wide spectrum of authors Sidhwa, feels that the current publishing scene in Pakistan is still "bleak". She added that there were new voices emerging but "unfortunately they concentrate on a minuscule population and their experiences. There is little writing being done about the common man's experience," said Sidhwa.
