Products made from banana and corn fibre make an eco-friendly statement in an exhibition at Fabindia.

WITH THE focus increasingly shifting to sustainable craft development with locally available material, many self-help organisations are being set up in remote corners of the country. One such is the Kishkinda Trust, located in Anegudi near the World Heritage Centre of Hampi.
Since 1997, the Kishkinda Trust has been working with villagers, mostly women and children, on various income generation projects, educating them on how to convert banana and corn fibre into functional products.
Some of these lifestyle products made under the aegis of the Kishkinda Trust are currently on display at an exhibition on at Fabindia, Ilford House, 3, Woods Road.
There is an arresting range of bags, including crochet worked shopping bags, `Buddha' bags, hand bags in various shapes and sizes as well as rucksacks. The corn fibre yarn has been used effectively to make different crochet patterns, be it smart squares or floral and geometrical designs. Also available are woven table mats, coasters and caps.
The Kishkinda Trust trains women in tailoring and Kasuti embroidery and some of the garments are sarongs, wraparounds, kurtas, shorts and blouses, fashioned out of Ilkal and Chettinad saris. In bright and mellow hues with distinctive borders, embellished with Kasuti embroidery, the garments spell class. Ilkal saris, some with Kasuti embroidery, are also available.
The exhibition ends today (July 15).
