It's a woman's world!

As the Britney-Shakira war hots up, a third contender enters the battlefield. Kylie Minogue currently heads the race with her latest album `Fever'. Time to make up your minds as to who your loyalties lie with.

POP QUEENS: Shakira and Kylie Minogue.

EXACTLY TWO years ago, a new pop sensation was born, by the name of Britney Spears. She became hugely successful with her very first single, Baby One More Time. Topping the charts with Crazy and Sometimes, she recently released her self-titled second album.

A few months ago, another new singer made it big in the international music scene - Shakira, with Whenever Wherever. Her debut album of English-Latino songs has been well received.

So, why are we talking about all this? Simply because of this new trend of female solo artistes making it big. Add to that the intense competition between the girls to gather as much fan following as possible. The rivalry has become so obvious that every `chaiwallah' in town is talking about it.

Ask a new friend about his or her taste in music - and you can be sure the first question would be, "Whom do you like better - Britney or Shakira?" If your choice happens to be same as your friend, bingo! Or else, this is the end of another beautiful friendship.

As the Britney-Shakira `mahayudh' hots up, a third contender makes her entry in the battlefield. Put your hands together for Kylie Minogue, everyone.

Born on May 28, 1968 in Melbourne, Australia, Kylie is an actress-turned singer who started her career as early as 1978. She was part of the famous Australian soap opera called Neighbours where she made her appearance with another pop icon from Australia, Natalie Imbruglia. During her two-and-a-half year stint with Neighbours (many instalments were seen in India on the Star TV channel), Kylie recorded her debut single, The Locomotion which was a huge hit, making the UK charts at Number One.

This feat encouraged her to release I Should Be So Lucky and Wouldn't Change Her Thing.

A few movie appearances like The Delinquents followed - and in 1994, she released a self-titled album. Since then, Kylie has been belting out albums every other year along with a few TV serials like Skyways and cult animated series The Sullivans. In 1988, she was voted Top Female Singer and Newcomer by the Australian newspapers and in 2000, she performed at the Summer Olympic Games in Sydney.

Now, Kylie is back with her new album, Fever (EMI; Rs. 135). Can't Get You Out Of My Head and In Your Eyes can be heard at every discotheque in town and the third single from the album, Love At First Sight is fast gaining popularity.

In fact, the video is already a hit and every college girl wants to get her hands on those "Kylie cargo pants" - which has become the latest fashion fad.

The song is very infectious and is sure to be a massive hit here. Other potential hits in the album are Dance Floor, More More More and Come Into My World.

The cassette is priced at Rs. 135, but right now, a special offer is on where a free compilation album is doled out with every Kylie tape - a good bargain.

The Britney-Shakira-Kylie encounter has reached its peak - and it's time to make up your own minds about whom you like the best.

For a start, feel free to voice your choice to vishnua@hotmail.com and next week, wait for the results.

Till then, Adios Amigos!
