Meesa mints money

FOR ALMOST a year, Malayalam cinema was going through a drought with no blockbuster hits. When people were losing faith in commercial cinema, along came dependable Dileep's "Meesa Madhavan". The film is turning out to be the biggest hit in the history of Malayalam films. This comedy film has taken an astounding Rs. 1.09 crores as distributor share from 39 screens in Kerala in the first 20 days. The film, made at a cost of Rs. 1.23 crores, will start making profit 25 days after its release. "Meesa Madhavan" offers exactly what the audience wanted _ a light-hearted comedy with a good story. The Dileep- Jagathy Sreekumar comic timing is perfect and makes the film a solid entertainer. Director Lal Jose and scriptwriter Ranjan Pramod have worked wonders with the script, which tells the story of a petty thief in a small village. The audience sympathy goes out to the thief Madhavan Nair in his comic encounters with the local moneylender Bhageerathan Pillai. The sylvan surroundings of Palakkad villages like Mankara and Chitoor are etched well by cameraman S. Kumar, which adds richness to the film. Last week, sneak previews were held in Chennai for three top Tamil heroes, and the latest we hear is that all of them are after Lal Jose and offering immediate bulk dates to remake the film in Tamil.
