Deserved distinction

TEACHING IS not just a job. It is a vocation and one in which generations can be moulded. Maya Mohan, Principal of Chinmaya Vidyalaya, Vaduthala, obviously took this task in right earnest. She has won the `Award to teachers for the year 2001', instituted by the Central Board of Secondary Education.

Ms Mohan is the only recepient on this award from Kerala, of the 12 selected from all over India. There were 7000 schools, which were nominated. The award constitutes a certificate of commendation, cash award of Rs 15,000, and a shawl. It is to be presented at a function in Delhi, by the Union Minister for Human Resources, Mr Murli Manohar Joshi on September 4, 2002.

Ms Mohan has been at the helm of affairs at Chinmaya Vidyalaya, Vaduthala, since 1992. Before that she had been teaching in the same school and was moulded by her mother, Ms Kamakshi Balakrishnan, an educationist, who is now the correspondent secretary of the school.

"What's nice about Ms Maya is that she understands our problems," said Raman, an ex-student of the school. That mix of firmness and understanding, which is so essential for a teacher, is maybe what got her the award.

Ms Mohan also has an MPhil in international relations from JNU.
