Moving on arterial roads
WITH A Supreme Court order banning `processions' on arterial roads, the annual Citizens' Run has had to look for a new route for this year's Run on police advice. In the process, it has had to postpone the Run scheduled for September 1 to September 22. And instead of following the traditional route, starting from Gandhi Mandapam to Gandhi Statue, the new route will be from Gandhi Statue to War Memorial and back to Gandhi Statue. The annual Citizens' Run is conducted to support small NGOs, who do not have the clout to reach the big donors. The support for these NGOs is also on the basis of concrete projects, which have to be completed in one year. This year, the Citizens' Run plans to raise Rs. 10-12 lakhs to support five small NGOs.
Speaking of arterial roads, I don't know whether two roads I recently travelled on are arterial road or not, but the Ennore Expressway (Expressway, did someone say?!) threatened by erosion and the Tiruvottriyur High Road are probably the two worst main roads in the city. I do not know when these were last surfaced, but as they are, they are a disgrace to a metropolis and I would not be surprised if anyone planning a procession in fact welcomed the ban, if these pockmarked roads were the ones to be traversed!
