Award for city doctor
DR. H. V.HANDE, former Minister of Health, received the "For the Sake of Honour" award instituted by the Rotary Club of Madras, recently. The award recognised his contribution to the cause of eradicating polio and measles. Dr. Hande has been practising medicine from 1952 and was Minister for Health in MGR's Government. The Rotary Club and Dr. Hande have worked together to conduct polio and measles prevention projects and have successfully implemented the measles vaccine campaign and the 3H programme, which included the Polio Plus campaign. He entered politics in 1942 and was elected to the Tamil Nadu State legislature for five terms. He received the B.C. Roy award for taking Tamil Nadu to the first slot in health welfare measures for three years, consecutively. He has translated the Kamba Ramayanam into English and has written a biography of his mentor, the late Rajaji. He is now a member of the National Council of the BJP and his latest book is "Indian Constitution Distortions during Emergency the need for Review".
