Off the beaten track

LUCKY ALI started the recent trend of singers turning heroes. Soon, Sonu Nigam followed suit. Down South, Harish Raghavendra plays the lead role in the Arun Pandian-directed "Vikatan". Now, yet another crooner has joined the bandwagon. Unni Menon has made his debut in a Malayalam film titled "Stithi".

Sharat, who had won accolades for his earlier award winning "Sayannam", has directed "Stithi". Unni Menon plays Vivek, a government employee who is threatened by economic liberalisation. For a newcomer, Menon exudes a cool screen presence.

Unni Menon says: " There is an actor in every singer. I too had many offers to act in commercial films, but being a promoter of aesthetic cinema, I wanted to make my debut in an art house film, by an award winning director". "Stithi", made on a shoestring budget of Rs. 13 lakhs, is being screened at various film festivals.
