A new face for lace

Crochet lace making is one of the delicate crafts of Andhra Pradesh. Make a fashion statement this summer with this handcrafted lace using it in a variety of garments and accessories.

Crochet lace takes a giant leap on the fashion calendar.

INDIA HAS always been the land of fascination, enthralling the visitor with her magnificent wealth of craft types. Diversity has been the hallmark of the country. For ages, this form of diversity with its exquisite beauty, has been preserved and expressed through what is termed as "crafts''.

Also, India has had the openness to nurture foreign crafts in her womb. The craft of crochet lace making is one such example that stands as a testimony to the fact. Undimmed by age, over the centuries, the artisans have kept the craft alive, so much so that even art historians view the craft as one with Indian momentum.

Andhra Pradesh has been a reservoir of many aesthetic craft types, one being the delicate craft of `crochet lace making' practiced in and around Narsapur. The history of the crochet lace industry in these areas runs parallel to the colonial accession of the region during the 18th Century. A belief having ample written proof is that this craft was taught to the local women by Mr. and Mrs. Macrae of Scotland in 1844.

Ever since, this craft has seen mushroom growth. Today, it has taken a giant leap on the fashion calendar. This summer, the `handcrafted look' rules supreme in apparel and fashion accessories. Open mesh structure clothing is indicated... a concept that can be achieved by the delicate yarn craft technique of crochet.

Hand-crafted fashion accessories sail strong this season.

Elementary stitches and pattern stitches create a porous web, oh! so ideal for the summer setting. Silhouette ideas like tank tops, spaghetti blouses, boxy fit tops, twin sets, full circle and half circle skirts, boleros, bandannas and stoles are a high in the western segment.

This summer sees the crochet lace indulge into the ethnic segment as well. Concepts like sari blouses, short kurtis, borders and edgings for saris and salwar kameez are the right summer pointers.

Also, dip yourself in crochet lace accessories this season. Belts and bags (tote, drawstring concepts, batuas) in crochet top the style charts. You know that it is time for florals. Sink into `flora' whether it is the motif in the lace or surface embellishment.

Ideas in apparel and fashion accessories echo high-level surface interest. Shine and shimmer gives lace a new face. Embroidery, beads and sequins are the right elements that elevate the level of delicacy this season.

Continuing the `glowing' narration, in the two to six ply yards, lurex incorporations are indicated. Also, rayon with a silken face elevates the `look' this season. Cotton-polyester blends occupy a low-grade space.

Along with the ethereal white and the all time favourite black, other hues also comprise the summer story. There is an emphasis on powder tones of blue, green, pink, yellow and lilac. Vibrant hues like unadulterated orange, magenta, red and green also form a part of the summer colourama.

The versatility of hand is vividly visible this summer. Based on rich culture and tradition, it kindles the creative spirit. Make sure, you pamper your creative spirit the right way.
