A Gurjari delight in the Capital
YOU MUST have heard about Gurjari, which symbolises handicrafts manufactured by tribals of Gujarat. Now you can feast your eyes on tribals working on wooden carvings at New Delhi's Baba Kharak Singh Marg. One can see a live demonstration of their craft at the State Emporia Complex and discover the glory of the bygone days reflected in the exquisite handicrafts of Gujarat. This Adivasi Mela - on till this coming Saturday - is a rare opportunity for Delhiites to know and understand the craftsmanship of tribals, who have been living in harmony with nature since time immemorial.
Tribals hailing from Gujarat's Dang, Chotadepur, Sabarkantha and Panchmahal have been diligently making beed jewellery and wooden pots in tribal areas. Now, tribals living near the Baroda have been given an opportunity to demonstrate their craftsmanship by Gujarat State Handicrafts Development Corporation at the State Emporia Complex. Beed jewellery is available from Rs.30 to 200, pithora paintings can be yours from Rs.50 to 1,000 and wooden carvings from Rs.200 to 500.
The significance of Gurjari cannot be underestimated as it has acted as a catalyst for the uplift of tribals. New avenues have opened up for contemporary utilisation of the crafts. Various workshops and training programmes are held regularly for the benefit of tribal craftsmen.
