Creativity in glass

Poornima Dayal's artistic bent finds expression in the medium of glass. Her works are on show at Amethyst till April 26.

A BUDDING entrepreneur with an artistic bent, Poornima Dayal graduated in Fine Arts from the Delhi College of Arts. Although trained and accustomed to painting on the conventional support of canvas, in time, she has changed her vehicle of expression to glass.
Glass has a luminosity and transparency that succumbs to creative articulations.
Colours speak differently through the translucent medium affording attractive manifestations of the artistic urge. Poornima's works comprise glassware, painted mirrors and paintings on glass. Glassware consisting of utilitarian objects such as decanters, traditional lamps, perfume holders and the like are given an artistic touch conferring a special status upon mass-produced articles.
The paintings are predominantly figurative, with the borders on mirrors taking on an ethnic bent. The omnipresent figure of the Ganesha abounds in her paintings, seemingly in an effort to undermine the commercial risk. A touch of originality in the choice of representations would certainly have facilitated in supplementing the appeal factor and in providing a distinctive character to her work.
This display of glass paintings and artefacts is on at the Amethyst at Sundar Mahal, Padmavathi Road, Jeypore Colony, Gopalapuram until April 26.
