PENDANTS, BAJUBANDS and beads come together in beautiful synergy at an exhibition-cum-sale being held at Jugal Kishore, famous for their reproduction of antique Indian jewellery. Gleaned from family heirlooms, photographs, books and even the exotic Nizam's jewellery collection, and using traditional techniques, Jugal Kishore has recreated, over the years, stunning pieces.
Innovative touches transform the diamond, ruby and emerald jewellery to suit contemporary tastes, or a fusion of the classicism of North and South Indian jewellery creates aesthetic pieces.
The pendants on display are impeccably crafted by traditional jewellers from Chettinadu and Jaipur. Melding age-old techniques of South Indian temple jewellery, and the `naquash' gold work and `inlay' work of North India, the exquisite pendants feature tiny peacocks, parrot and floral motifs, worked using Burma rubies, uncut diamonds and emeralds.
Or there might be an enormous emerald or sapphire framed by the loveliest tracery of `naquash' work. Some of the emerald pendants are miniature reproductions of the Nizam's jewellery collection, stunningly executed.
The pendants can be used as `interchangeable' pieces. For instance, a small 1" by 1 ½" emerald and uncut diamond pendant has been conceived as the central piece of neckwear, bajuband and `mogappu'. A tiny ruby and diamond studded parrot pendant can be used likewise.
Another novel concept created by the house of Jugal Kishore is a pair of pendants featuring Mughal style floral motifs in rubies and gold and inlaid on a flat emerald surface. Splendidly designed this is "the first time any jeweller has attempted this," claims Ashok Jugal Kishore.
Every piece in the collection is one of its kind, a paean to perfect craftsmanship and a rich heritage. And to enhance each piece, there is a choice of beads in precious and semiprecious stones ranging from ruby, emerald, sapphire and tourmaline to garnet, amethyst, peridot, onyx, Chinese jade, golden topaz, coral, real jade and pearls....
The exhibition is on at Jugal Kishore, 1st Floor Alsa Mall, Montieth Road and 44, (Old No. 73) C.P. Ramaswamy Road, Kalpataru Complex, Opp. Food World, Alwarpet, till May 16.
