Numero Uno

VIKRAM HAS done it again; his "Saamy" is a super hit! The film has grossed over Rs. 7 crores in 10 days from 100-odd centres in Tamil Nadu. In Kerala also, the film is doing fantastic business and may turn out to be a bigger hit than Kamalhassan's "Tenali" released two years back. The icing on the cake is that the remake rights of "Saamy" have been sold to a Telugu producer for a record price.

Everybody associated with the film, from the man who runs the cycle stand and canteen at the theatre screening "Saamy" to its distributors, producer, Vikram, heroine Trisha Krishnan, director Hari and music director Harris Jeyaraj, stands to gain from this mega hit. The best part is that due to its bumper `initial' collections, the film has proved to be profitable just 10 days after its release.

The worldwide trend these days is to ensure a film is profitable immediately on release, like the Hollywood film "X-Men-2" made on a budget of $110 million which grossed $155.2 million worldwide in just three days! Similarly superstar movies in Tamil are still viable if made on a tight budget and sold to distributors at a reasonable price. Says Pushpa Kandasamy, producer of "Saamy": "It is Kavitaalaya's biggest hit after "Annamalai" and "Muthu"."
