Bright hues, unusual motifs

A harmonious blend of texture, colour and craftwork marks the creations on display at Vimonisha Art Gallery.

SWIRLS OF colour and texture with a touch of embroidery, badla and sequin work bring fashion excitement to Chennai. An outstanding feature of the Taneja collection of saris, salwar kurta ensembles and tops is the use of hand block prints with unusual motifs as well as tie and dye in distinctive patterns. Conceived by Asita and Sharan Taneja from Bangalore, each sari and outfit is one of a kind. There is a wide variety to choose from chiffon, fine cotton, organdie, mull and georgette.
Huge hand block printed floral motifs, stripes and geometrical patterns on the saris and salwar suits make for elegant morning and eveningwear. The colours range from reds, oranges and pinks to pale greens, mauves and all shades of cream and white.
The embellishment done by hand lends a delicate touch to the creations. An interesting contrast is achieved by embroidery on boldly shaded chiffon, badla work on crinkled georgette and tiny bead motifs that complement the hand block prints.
The western tops come with or without embellishment in soft to vibrant hues. The beauty of the texture is highlighted in the cut and styling.
For those looking for bed linen, the exhibition offers a wide range of block printed bedspreads.
The exhibition-cum-sale ends on July 19 at Vimonisha Art Gallery, Khader Nawaz Khan Road, Nungambakkam.
