It's raining `kurtis'

Quintessentially Indian, the `kurti' has seen a rebirth having evolved out of a complex culture and in fabrics like viscose georgette, polyester georgette and crepe blends.

OF THE relationship between fashion and repetition, experts have declared that it is a fashion cycle that sees chronological birth and death of a style. Quintessentially Indian, the kurti has seen a rebirth and evolved out of a complex `culture cross.'

Shaking the all-powerful trilogy of style, functionality and newness, the kurti that has been sailing strong, for the last three seasons has gained the omnipresent status. The kurti can effortlessly run anytime ... anywhere or rather everywhere!

With a rejuvenated appeal, this creation of Indian fashion pundits tops the style charts once again. Drifting away the hassles of managing the long kurta under the wet sky, the kurti comes across as ideal monsoon wear.

With their `quick-fix' solutions, fabrics like viscose georgette; polyester georgette and crepe blends form a perfect setting for rainy days. A bright colour tray comprising dark hues that conceal stained and soiled spots form a part of this narration.

The cross-culture silhouette hints at a length varying between mid-thigh level to a little above the knee. The style could be fitted or semi-fitted. Opt for slits that are not too long (between 10 inches to 12 inches). You could be fashionably armed with cap sleeves, short sleeves or three-quarter sleeves.

To team up bottoms, salwars, offer more fabric volume to be drenched. Go in for churidar concepts but in polyester- lycra blends that not only provide an excellent fit but also are easy to wash and quick to dry. You could also team up slim-fit pants (ankle length, capris) to create an element of interest. Complete the look with dupattas, scarves or stoles.

It is time for `flower power'. Go for bright floral concepts thrown over simple kurtis. Also, juxtapose geometry with the same in the form of panels, two-piece sleeves, princess lines; pin tucks et al. Face-lift simple georgette bases with minimal sequin work. Surface design as sequin work following the contours of floral motifs on fabric bases is ruling strong. Techniques like block printing, cross-stitch, kantha stitchery, beadwork and mirror work offer a superlative status to the kurti.

The kurti can run all around the fashion clock. It can sail from college classrooms to convocation ceremonies, from worktable to business luncheons, from movie halls to evening cocktails. All you need is the right fabric, the right colour, the right silhouette, and the right surface design ... at the right time.

The kurti is one of the biggest fashion formulae created by the fashion pundits. It has proved to be a concept transcending age and time barriers and finding room season after season.
