Lighting their lives

WHAT SETS apart Inner Light, a candle shop located in Spencer Plaza, from its counterparts is the involvement of people who are mentally challenged in production of candles.

The shop is owned by Bethel Rehabilitation Centre, a unit of Dr. George Nursing Home for Mental Health, Kilpauk. The activity is part of the centre's endeavour to expedite the recovery of patients. "The mentally challenged are in a world of their own, hence training them on how to coordinate mind and body is important for their recovery. One of the methods adopted is occupational therapy where in they are led to engage in enjoyable occupations such as making candles, broomstick and phenol making," says Thomas George, Bethel Rehabilitation Centre.

The shop was started in 1999 to `lend a cutting edge' to candles made by these patients. But more than the sale and manufacture of candles it is the sense of satisfaction and fulfilment among the inmates that has been rewarding for George. " Even though their contribution is limited to only certain aspects of candle making such as threading or pouring wax, the sense of accomplishment on their faces is inexplicable."

Over 100 varieties of candles including perfumed, colour, birthday and white, are marketed through Inner Light. There are also 24-inch designer candles with acrylic paintings weighing over three kg with a burning time of 360 hours.

Crafted with care from high quality paraffin wax, the candles are dripless, smoke free and are said to last longer than the ordinary ones. "We use only top quality raw materials for production including certain additives that are used in toffees for their gloss. Even the wicks are specially treated," he says.

Incidentally, Inner Light has opened another outlet in Kilpauk in May. For details, the showroom can be contacted at Shop No.9, Vijay Tower, 18 Halls Road, Kilpauk, ph: 26444934.
