SHRUJAN WAS set up for the uplift of the rural women in the drought-prone area of Kutch in 1969. Today, Shrujan covers over 100 villages, training over 2,000 craftswomen from Kutch and Banaskantha in Gujarat, to use their native skills in embroidery to improve their quality of life.
It has not only created a thriving village industry but helped nurture traditional crafts, which would otherwise have disappeared. Now Shrujan's products are brought to the city by Contemporary Arts and Crafts at an exhibition at 45, C. P. Ramaswamy Road, which is on till September 6. One can choose from a wide range of wall hangings, cushion-covers, toran, bags, spectacle cases, saris, kurtas, dupattas, sleeves, shawls and stoles. A discount of 20 per cent is being offered. So check out the traditional splendour.
