A gift for all occasions

IT DISPELS darkness, smells good and is pleasing to the eye. Scented candles make excellent gifts as also are objets d'art. Today, candles are gifted on all occasions as they bring warmth and goodwill. Even the Bard of Avon has compared the glow of a candle to the radiance of a "good deed in a naughty world"!

An exclusive store for candles, Innerlight The Candle Shop, at Spencer's Plaza, stocks around 78 varieties in all shapes and sizes. Floating and aromatic candles are available in colours such as orange, red and yellow. Some have geometric shapes too. These candles do not drip, burn for a longer time and are smokeless. Some of them are used in diffusers in which a drop of aromatic oil is added to enhance the fragrance.

It is interesting to know that these candles are made by the inmates of the Bethel Rehabilitation Centre, Kilpauk. Innerlight has another outlet on Halls Road, Egmore.

At Sixth Sense on Sardar Patel Road, which has been selling candles for the past 5-6 years, floating, glass, aromatic and dinner tapers are fast-moving. Mulberry (purple), jasmine (yellow), gardenier (green), cinnamon and spice apples are some of the popular names here. The shop imports the extracts to manufacture these candles. Once the wax evaporates, it can be refilled for Rs.39. Sixth Sense has an outlet at Shopper's Stop too.

Contemporary Arts and Crafts at Alwarpet deals with taper candles (made of dried flowers), spherical (glazed finish), floating and gel varieties. Extracts from jasmine, rose, lavender and citrus are used. "Candles are in great demand during festive seasons and most of what we stock are made in Pondicherry," says Dexter, salesman. Crafts and Weaves, C.I.T. Colony, sells floating, gel, taper and ordinary candles.

The aromatherapy candles available at Naturally Auroville Boutique on Khader Nawaz Road are a blend of essential oils which help relax the body and mind. The wax for the scented candles is imported and it contains no chemical ingredient. From its humble beginnings candle making has become a thriving industry. As scented candles are not messy and burn for a longer time (aromatic candles for 90 minutes, tapers for 14 hours at a stretch) they are much sought-after these days.
