<150>"ART IS therapeutic," believes Mary Tharian, an artist and an art teacher. Living in Koramangala, her home is, in fact, a riveting world of colours, shapes, and forms. Pots in unusual colours and shapes and exquisite paintings capture one's attention.

Ms. Tharian, who came to Bangalore after her marriage in 1973, was a busy homemaker and had to wait until her two sons grew up to find time to devote to her passion.

"When I suddenly discovered freedom from my daily routine, I did what I loved most, and realised that I needed to learn more. So I trained myself in the medium of sketching for a year and a half under an expert," explains Ms. Tharian. She then went on to learn pot painting and the colourful art of batik painting.

Ms. Tharian teaches people ranging from seven to 70 years. Two of her students, she says, are terminally ill and come to her classes after chemotherapy sessions. "Art provides her solace. Everybody has a creative spirit," she says. "I learn so much from children as they tend to be carefree and open," says Ms. Tharian.

In fact, her classes are so popular with the little ones that she had to open classes exclusively for them, on weekends. She also holds special sessions for housewives and professionals.

Stained glass painting, murals, pot painting are also a part of her art classes.

She ensures that not more than eight people are in one session.

Ms. Tharian includes several styles in one painting session to make the class lively and enjoys watercolours the most.

"It is so delicate, it is truly a refined and sensitive medium," she declares. Ms. Tharian can be contacted on 5538893.
