WITH THE winter chill setting in slowly, the shopping needs include razais and woollies. Head straight to Urvi - Weaves & Crafts, where an exhibition cum sale of Rajasthani razais will be held, beginning from today. Brought to the city by Shrujan, an organisation started to instil confidence and self-sufficiency in the women in the drought and poverty region of Kutch, the exhibition will showcase the rich material culture of embroidery that has been handed down for generations in the region. Cushion covers, wall hangings, kurtas, blouses, mufflers, shawls, evening bags, etc., will also be part of the exhibition. The Rajasthani razais are available in cotton double side, hand block-printed, in singles and doubles. Shrujan works with 15 different embroidery styles, some have been revived from near extinction, and provides work to 3,500 women from 100 villages.
Design centre on wheels is an extensive and ambitious project to preserve, document and rejuvenate Kutch embroidery by Shrujan.
