The Orissa handloom and handicrafts exhibition offers a wide choice
|
COME WINTER, there are exhibitions galore in the city. However, the avid shopper has to be discerning while going on a spending spree. Different states are showcasing their regional arts and crafts. Utkalika, the Orissa State Emporium, is organising a sale of Orissa handloom and handicrafts till January 4 at the C.M. Hall, Cathedral Road (Opposite Agarwal Eye Hospital). The exhibition will showcase artefacts, textiles etc. at reasonable prices.
There are Sambalpuri ikkat, tie and dye vegetable coloured saris in bright hues, cotton and silk saris with Bomkai designs (Rs. 240 onwards). Ikkat dress materials, cushion covers, men's kurtas and kidswear are also available. The Pipili's appliqué work on wall hangings in black, red and blue with peacock, floral and Ganesha motifs and the palm leaf engraved ones are eye-catching. The multicoloured lampshades, paintings on palm leaves and cloth, pattachitra depicting ras leela, Jaganaatha and Ganeshas and tribal paintings are the other attractions.
Greeting cards made of paper (Rs.10 onwards) and palm leaf (Rs.15 onwards) could be an ideal buy during the festive season. Dhokra artecrafts, garden umbrellas, bags and coasters, wooden painted Jaganatha idols, cedar wood artefacts are also on display.
The exhibition also has a collection of silver eardrops, necklaces with pendants in filigree work and bangles. There are decorative items too in silver. The exhibition is open from 10.30 a.m. to 8.30 p.m.on all days.
