New Shanthi Sagar is the latest vegetarian eatery that offers exclusive Jain cuisine
|
VEGETARIAN CUISINE has many takers across the world today. Reason, the crisp succulent greens offer the daily fibre and minerals and are filling at the same time. If you have been looking for a solely vegetarian restaurant, here is a new place that you can check out. Interestingly, apart from the delectable Indian platter, this eatery also brings Mexican, Italian, Chinese and Jain cuisine.
Located on the busy Raj Bhavan Road, New Shanthi Sagar is the first outlet of the popular Bangalore-based chain of vegetarian restaurants by the same name, with over nine branches in the garden city. "Hyderabad is emerging as a cosmopolitan city. We found that there was a need for a pure vegetarian eatery and opened our first branch here. We would be coming up with more branches based on the response," says Yashodhar, manager operations New Shanthi Sagar. Barely a month old, the three-storey restaurant is packed in the evenings. Designed by Aslam, a noted architect from Bangalore, the restaurant displays copious use of glass frosted, tinted and etched, and copper on the table and stairway, which adds a unique aura to the place. Again the drapes reflect a copper and silver sheen. The ambience is well lit highlighting the verdant canopy that emerges from one of the walls and extends to the next level of the restaurant. The yellow hue continues on this floor as well with a dash of vibrant paintings that adorn the walls. The next floor takes a deeper metallic tone and showcases abstract paintings and stained glass artwork. If you have a party to throw, the banquet hall on the top floor is an opulent option with bright lamps and flattering upholstery.
Apart from the popular Pongal and Rice bath, the restaurant is popular for its unlimited pre-plated deluxe thalis as well as the north Indian vegetarian fare, for lunch (11 a.m.-3.30 p.m.) and dinner (7 p.m.-11 p.m.). Open from 8 a.m., the restaurant also doubles as a fast food joint offering Dahi puri, Cheese sandwich, Kesari falooda, Malai kulfi and Strawberry shake, the latter made with fresh strawberries sourced from Bangalore.
"Most of our ingredients are brought from Bangalore, such as ghee, Badagi red chillies and other spices," says Yashodhar. "Our dosas are unique," he adds pointing to the fruit-based Pineapple, Cheeku and Jack Fruit dosas and over 25 other options such as Carrot, Kadipatta and the Cheese masala dosa.
But the USP of the eatery remains its extensive Jain menu. "Carrots, beetroot, onion, ginger, garlic and other select ingredients are avoided in the Jain cuisine," says Chef Siddharaju. Sweet corn soup, Vegetable fried rice, Veg noodles and Gobi Manchurian are some of the popular options in the Jain menu here, he adds.
And, for the sweet tooth, the sweetmeat shop offers traditional sweets from Karnataka, such as the Mysore pak, Coconut burfi, Cream toast, Kesar badam burfi and more along with a generous helping of Bengali desserts such as Ras malai and Cham cham. The restaurant also offers free home delivery, within a radius of 10 kilometres, and dial-a-meal service. You can reach New Shanthi Sagar, No. 6-3-927, B/1, Shivraj Tower, Raj Bhavan Road, Somajiguda, on Tel: 30911197, 55738587.
