MANY FAIL to see beyond Ruby Bhatia the bright-eyed, silver-tongued anchor-model. But if they made the effort, they would be rewarded with an interesting layer of her personality - a sensitivity to the spiritual and the social.
During a recent event in the city, one could not help notice this bubbly girl who was in the company of her friends. The group was obviously on a wave of comraderie, sharing jokes and nattering away. Ruby was throwing her head back and laughing heartily. As you talked to her later, you realised that she had another set of qualities that had remained largely unknown. For one, she could revel in a quiet moment by herself. She attributed this character trait to her faith in the principles embodied in the Bhagvad Gita.
"Its directions and assurances have helped me put my head together; this sacred book has put my life on an even keel. It has guided me on to the realisation that we are all tiny percentages of God. We are small specks of His energy. His Personhood alone is complete. Take a sporting event, for instance. If God competed in it, can any of us even think of winning it? We become stronger than we are when we are in union with God," she said and added, "You should read the best translation of the Bhagvad Gita, which I think `God At Work' by Jaya Dalal Goenka is. I have been lucky to have this book since I was eight."
Make no mistake about it. Ruby Bhatia does not use religion as a crutch to wade through wordly woes. She is a staunch believer in positive action. To give an example, she is a card-carrying member of what is called the Crusade Against Tobacco (CAT).
"CAT is actually Aman Varma's brainchild. It is a group of over 120 celebrities who use their popularity to drive home to college students the dangers of tobacco use. My active involvement in CAT followed the tragic death of a friend, who was only 47 years old. His face was eaten away by cancer. He made a piteous sight."
