Mukta Bajaj designs spring summer line of ethnic wear for Rishi Festival, US
ANTIQUE ZARDOSI and kundan work on Indo westerns for the second generation of Hyderabadis in the US. Well, Mukta Bajaj of Perfection is doing just that. After a successful visit to Chicago, New York, New Jersey, Kentucky and other high-density pockets of Indian Diaspora there, Mukta Bajaj has designed a spring summer line for the Rishi Festival organised by Heritage India, to be held this month, in Atlanta, California and other major cities in the US. The festival is expected to have a footfall of over 10,000 Indians.
"The collection has been designed based on the preferences of the Hyderabadis abroad. We have used a lot of embroidery since people there prefer very heavy trousseau. They are more Indian than us and look for ethnic wear that they can sport during festivals, weddings and weekend gatherings. While the older generation prefers churidars and salwar kameez, the younger family members opt for trendy stuff. In particular, Hyderabadi folks in New York and New Jersey are hip," she recollects.
Likewise her line reads ethno chic, with a hint of retro. The fabrics are pure chiffons and crepes in typical spring summer hues. Heavy churidars and salwars with kora, kundan and Parsi work are teamed with plain kurtas and shaded dupattas. For the Indo westerns, pants and short kurtis showcase beadwork, coloured stones and square sequins for detailing. Also the kurtas have detailed collars and stylish sleeves. The most interesting point about her ensemble is the price tag. "My collection is priced at Rs. 560 onwards. The maximum tag reads less than $100," she says.
It is not just US that Mukta is making her foray into. Star Plus, a chain of boutiques in Dubai, is organising a promotion of kurtis designed by her, slated for early May. "The kurtis for Dubai feature heavy mirror, kantha, zardosi and badla on prints. This line is for a cosmopolitan crowd who may choose to wear the kurti with jeans," says Mukta.
"It is very difficult to break into a global market. You need to have a client base from here itself. Once there you call them over to see your collection," she adds. Also, most of the NRIs, when in twin cities on a homecoming, drop in to design some clothes with her before they go back.
As for the new lines, samples are also available at Perfection (39, L.G.F, Amrutha Mall, Somajiguda, Tel: 55669680). Have a dekko of couture that Hyderabadis abroad fancy.
