Weaving magic

Check out the exotic collections at the two carpet melas on in the city

LOOKING TO add that exotic touch to interiors? Here's a bonanza. Two carpet melas, on in the city till July 15, offer the best of Kashmiri carpets, antique Persian, Turkish and Central Asian carpets, kilims and rugs.

From one ft. Kashmiri hand knotted carpets to 19X14 ft. reproductions of the legendary Artebil, the choice is varied at both the melas. If some feature the Tree of Life, some depict Mughal hunting scenes.

The show at Indo Persian Carpets (27, Chamiers Road, Nandanam) has on display reproductions of classic Kashmiri and Persian carpets. The `Purdah Carpet' in indigo blue in which four small purdah pieces have been joined together is eye-catching. The silk Bulbulkashan and Qum carpets speak volumes for the workmanship of the carpet weavers from the valley. Also they are there to demonstrate the intricacies of their craft.

Alison's Carpet Mela (10/50, Kasturi Ranga Road, Alwarpet) showcases originals such as the Persian Hamdans and Bokharas as well as the traditional Turk, Afghan and Russian rugs and Pakistani wall hangings. If the Hamdans feature huge roses, the carpets from Turkey celebrate geometric motifs. The carpets are so exquisite that they look like paintings.

The melas also have on offer Kashmiri Pashmina shawls, papier mache lifestyle products, embroidered Kashida work cushions, jewellery and walnut wood furniture.
