Rains really ushered goodluck. Guests streamed in for Thierry Mugler's perfume launch and even risked guessing colours and emotions associated with the fragrances

John Maranges at the launch
BOMBAY IS lashed by monsoon rain on the day international perfume house Thierry Mugler chooses to launch two of their premier labels in the Indian market. But John Marangos, PR Director, Asia Pacific for the French label of Thierry Mugler is unperturbed. "Someone told me that in India rains symbolise good luck," he says pointing to the sheets of rain overwhelming Marine Drive, "and so, this is just great luck for us."
Circumstances bow to his words. Guests arrive despite the advent of the first real rains, guides for the evening are waved into place, Thierry Mugler ambassadors put on their best smiles, and an unconventional launch gets underway at Mumbai's Inter Continental Hotel.First, the unusual part about the two Thierry Mugler perfumes (Angel for women and A*men for men) now available in India: they are refillable.
Harking back to the centuries old practice of refilling perfume bottles, TM bottles too can be refilled for much less than their original price at their outlet in Parkos at the Leela Galleria. Angel's star shaped blue diamond cut bottle can be refilled at the store from special filler, while A*men can be unlocked at the bottom to fit in its refill.
Refillable bottles
The A*men bottle is metallic, shaped like that most male accessory the hip flask. It even has a special microfibre polisher, and Marangos explains that the unlocking feature and polishing facility tap into the male fascination for tinkering with gadgets and polishing surfaces. TM outlets will feature the complete "TM experience", even allowing customers to experience hand massages with the lotions from the TM bath and bodyline, which includes hair mists, deodorants, and gels.
At the launch, the star is clearly the theme of the evening. It's Thierry Mugler's lucky symbol and since his talent has been accompanied by a fair dollop of luck in all his ventures fashion photography, perfumery, and costume designing among others the star occupies pride of place. It's everywhere sparkling on the ceiling, hidden under people's chairs and clinging to company executive's business cards.
Three guests find cut-out stars hidden under their chairs, and they are invited to be blindfolded on bar stools to begin a guessing game of what Mugler envisioned, when he crafted the different layers which blend to create the nuanced tone of Angel. In between bites of mint sorbet, fruit salad, and chocolate mousse, the guests hazard adjectives to describe the colours and emotions Mugler might have intended to convey in his signature label. "Blue? Fruity...? Definitely sensual..." and so on.
Complex fragrances
Angel is a complex and oriental fragrance, intended by Mugler to harmonise three notes the celestial, invoking the feeling of infinite space; the delicious, capturing the delight of a fruit bouquet and finally the voluptuous, igniting sensuality with fragrances derived from vanilla, chocolate and caramel. A*men is woody and vibrant, "combining coffee and styrax, mellowed by musk and Tonka bean" explain company executives.
A 50 ml refillable bottle of Angel costs Rs. 3,850 while a refillable 30 ml of A*men costs Rs. 2900. Contact Parkos at 51153884/5 for details.
