Not just face value

FOR A CNN viewer in this part of the globe, Mohita Rajpal is a known face. Anchoring CNN International's World News programme, it has now stopped being a rarity for Mohita that she turns heads on streets.
"I don't really think about it now," says this Hong Kong born non-resident Punjabi. Joining the channel in 2001, Mohita says anchoring is not as glamorous as it looks on screen. It is just not skin-deep. "We have to constantly keep reading newspapers, magazines, watch other channels and keep us updated on current affairs. After all, handling a guest at the studio, trying to extract news from him for the viewers is my sole responsibility at that particular time," prompting to the anchors from the back is more often not a norm but a rarity in CNN studios, she adds.
In New Delhi this week to announce the second edition of CNN Young Journalist Awards in India, and for the first time in Pakistan too, she says, "the awards to be given in TV, print and online journalism categories in October this year, will have combined winners from the sub-continent.
"This region now has very talented young journalists in all the three mediums. CNN wants to recognise that and thereby create a new breed of young journalists in both India and Pakistan," she states.
Having interviewed many international leaders including former Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak, Mexican president Vicente Fox, Peruvian President Alejandro Toledo and Colombian President Andres Pastrana and Liberian predient Moses Blah and many more, Monita says all these experiences have left her feeling "the challenge".
"They are all educational finally," she says. "After all, the bottom line is, you have to tell your story and tell it stylistically. You have to help piece all developments together in the mind," the lady seems bang on target. Not very forthcoming in talking about United States handling of War Against Terror, this Atlanta-based journalist adds though, "Coming presidential elections would be really telling. We are doing different programmes to get the American pulse."
Well, regarding this story, the whole world is watching.
