Trinkets forever

Check out jewellery designer Charuu Sharma's `polki' and `kundan' period collection

CLASSICAL TORTOISE shell earrings and agate brooches, these are some of the priced trinkets from the Georgian, Victorian and Edwardian jewellery--the Three Graces. Hyderabad boasts of a similar tradition thanks to the Paigah patronage. Till date uncut diamonds or polki- studded chokers and kundan ornaments are a rage with jewellery buffs here. And period jewellery is the buzzword.

New Delhi-based jewellery designer Charuu Sharma works in polki and semi-precious stones. She has crafted exclusive period jewellery pieces for the Who's Who in the Capital, since 1990 when she first started. Her recent expo at Hyatt was a sell out. "When I see coloured stones I think design. Behind every piece is a long procedure," she says as she works with her karigars from Bikaner in setting the stones in sand polished and matte 18-karat gold.

The news for shopaholics in the twin cities is that Charuu Sharma will be visiting the twin cities with her period jewellery line featuring kundan sets priced at Rs. 6,000 to high-end pieces that will be on view on August 20-21 (11 a.m-7 p.m.) at Perfection (39, L.G.F, Amrutha Mall, Somajiguda, Tel: 55669680). As for Charuu, her next stop is going to be Bollywood she says. A good idea, with Devdas et al cashing in on the period look.
