Chains on display at Splash
AS FAR as stores go, Splash, opposite Sree Moolam Club in Vazhuthacaud, is no different from other `all-purpose luxury stores' where one can shop for gifts, costume jewellery, toys, antiques, stationery and baby clothes. However, what sets it apart is the small but important set of patrons - men who shop for costume jewellery not for their girlfriends but for themselves. Blame it on movies and Shahrukh and Co.
Says Pramila Gopal who owns Splash: "Teenagers and college students are shopping in a big way for costume jewellery. Maybe it is the movies but this kind of jewellery is really in. The counter for men's jewellery was an idea that has proved to be a big hit."
Bracelets in various finishes
The store has a small but decently-stocked corner with all the knick-knacks that `boys' would like. Though there are the mandatory T-Shirts and track pants, razors and shaving gel, the wide array of chains, bracelets, rings and pendants are difficult to miss.
The pieces of jewellery come in all kinds of finishes such as gold, brass, copper, steel, and silver. The bracelets are either chunky ones with the mandatory skulls and dragons or those in subtle designs. As far as pendants and rings go, there are skulls, dragonheads, scorpions and bullet-shaped pendants, which also come in a variety of finishes.
Chains occupy the pride of place. These come in many sizes - from the very thin to Shahrukh Khan's trademark heavy ones. There is less fancy jewellery here too if you do not want something that is ostentatious.
Besides jewellery, there are lighters, wallets, watches, mobile phone covers, belts, perfumes and deodorants at Splash.
The store is a favourite with girls as well, since they can shop for gifts for their friends here. Starting a corner for men has surely paid off for Splash.
