KUMBHAM TERRACOTTA Society has come to town to exhibit its ware after a gap of two-and-a-half years, coinciding with the Ganesha festival season.
The sale, at A Bit of Sunday, has on display a range of products, from table accessories and kitchen utensils to murals and landscaping knickknacks. You will find here pen stands, nameplates, pin trays, clocks, dinner sets, curd setters, decorative tiles, wall lamps, bird baths, garden lamps and so on. One can also place an order for a customised mural at the show.
Aruvacode potters
The products are a result of years of experience of designer and activist K.B. Jinan, and the skills of the potters of Aruvacode in Kerala. Jinan gave a new lease of life to the traditional pottery of this remote village, just as the craftsmen were contemplating giving up the craft to take up masonry, considering that there were no buyers for their ware.
Eco-friendly
With Jinan's design inputs and marketing efforts, the potters are today able to sustain themselves on the traditional craft.
The efforts show that terracotta can be an eco-friendly substitute for plastic for modern, everyday living.
