Boho-chic affair

WHAT SRIDEVI, Urmila Matondkar and Karisma Kapoor did to the nine-yard wonder was mind-blowing. Kudos to Manish Malhotra and his designing vision. And now, as if responding to a silent wish of many a non-filmy client more so in this part of the world, the designer comes up with a line that bridges the gap between film and real world. "This line is an amalgamation of colours, much like what I do for movies. And it represents glamour. It's a diffusion line, in between pręt and couture and at the price of pręt. I have never done a sari for Rs. 10,000 before," observes Manish as he launches his label Manish Malhotra at Strip.

This is also an important occasion for the designer as it is for the first time that he is retailing his ensemble with his own label.

"This is for the first time that I have used blacks and prints," he says pointing at a boho-chic line of crinkled skirts in options fish cut and flared, ponchos and kaftans that could be teamed up with jeans and the out-of-the-world tees, hand painted and sequin studded, in white, hot pink and yellow. "At Rs. 1,750 it's a steal," says the designer, looking at a pink tee.

Candy pink and lilac saris embellished with a sprinkle of sequins, pin tucked cotton silk kurtas featuring thread work and teamed with churidars and shaded dupattas, the ensemble matches the designer's interpretation. "Everything is shaded. Happy colours that signify celebration of day-to-day life, and clothes that can be worn for a date or a party. In essence it's feminity with lots of sensuality and speaks confidence, just like the present day woman," says Manish.

"We sold over 70 of the 90 shirts in the first few weeks. Interestingly, apart from the Telugu film stars we had a lot of people, not film related who bought them and we have been getting inquiries for more.

And that's the whole concept at Strip — to bring inaccessible top designers closer to their clientele," says Rohit Reddy. So, after a traditional classy Manish Malhotra, youthful and funky line from Rocky S is next on the anvil, says Rohit.

For now drop in at Strip (Lumbini Amrutha Chambers, Road No.3, Banjara Hills, Tel: 55731115) to have a dekko at a slice of fashion that scorches the silver screen.
