THE IMMENSE social changes in society have necessitated people in the city to with an urging need to enhance their appearance. While much of this comes in the manner of boutiques and saloons that promise a change, many still feel the lack of `that something' that would cause a metamorphosis in their being.

Babi Singh, a vibrant clothes artiste emphasises this and coveting it from a whole new angle has introduced a totally different approach to the situation. The NIFT and London College of Fashion graduate calls it a `complete make over', to grant a look in tune with the personality of a client. When most people simply pull fashionable attires off the rack, Babi explains the most important aspect is, "to be in style according to who one is". And focusing on this, the concept of a `studio' envisaged. A place that harps not on clothes alone, but one that attends to every aspect that contributes to the look of the person. Hair, skin and nails!

Individual approach

Babi explains that her studio, on Rajaji Road, is where an individual is first studied before "suggesting appropriate changes." She explains that personality is of prime importance, and the right attire should always suit the individual who wears it. Dealing primarily in cottons and silks, the

fabric she obtains remains unique to the manufacturers in Bangalore and Madras. "Nothing is bought in bulk, and we often purchase light colours that gives us a chance to dye them into various shades."

Client specific

Thus, instead of being stuck with what the market has to offer, artistes such as her prepare unique shades that are bound to relate to the client she deals with. She adds that bright shades with bold prints are chosen for extroverts with a bubbly personality, lighter and more sober shades for others. Besides which, categories include formal or casual wear and day or night wear.

In fact, adhering to uniqueness, her studio insists on block prints, specific borders, hand painting, various types of embroidery and mix and match clothing that would ensure `one design for a one client' only. Thus, nothing would be repeated and individuals can be confident that they possess "their own personal designer wear." To match these, shoes, bags and scarves are designed, in complementing colours and patterns.

Suitable style

From clothing, Babi explains they move onto other issues like suggestions on hair care and styles. With Habib's hair and beauty saloon (an outlet of Jawed Habib, New Delhi) being part of the studio, instant enhancement that suits the person is offered. "Often people don't know what might suit their skin type or the frame of their face.

We offer advice in order to accentuate this, especially regarding hair colouring, hair bonding and so on, basically things in vogue."

Total revamp

Everything is touched upon, which provides a wholesome effect. She explains just one area of change, like clothing, may not be enough to provide the change an individual is looking for.

"This difference in total. It often has a psychological effect that boosts one's confidence and changes the attitude." And with a snack bar added to the studio as planned for a complete revamping experience, what more can the fashion conscious in Kochi ask for?
