In a new avtaar

Wear salwaars differently and take a leap into fashion says clothes designer, ARCHANA NANDAL.

TAKE A leap - a big leap. Because this fashion season's new pant allows you to. Inspired by none other than our very own Indian Punjabi salwaar, the pant does a delightful eastward sortie. Purists - wear it traditionally, patiala style, the way Nandita Das does in the new Shubha Mudgal / Salmaan Ahmad (of Junoon ) music video ` Ghoom taana' . The trick is team it up always, repeat always, with a short, not longer than mid thigh length kurti to avoid the barrel effect.

OR, be wise, economise and modernise it and save on all those yards and yards of fabric to give a little shape to the drape and make a slimmer version with just a few pleats at the waist instead of a million gathers. Leave the length of it straight and loose, only to narrow down a bit at the hem.

Decorate with lace, embroider small butis or put a contrast patch at hem. This one, wear with short just-below-the-waist tops, shirts or even fitted tees. To make it formal, combine with hip length kurti and drape a big voluminous dupatta that leaves a swishing trail behind you as you walk. To be more adventurous, tie-in the hem together with elastic - harem pant style. A dot bindi here, a jhola bag there and there you are ready -brand new, fashionable and trendy.
