If you thought people consulted the planets only for marriages or to make major decisions, then think again. Astral considerations may have a role to play in the choice of beauty treatments too, going by the latest trend in skin care.
The recently introduced gem facial by a leading herbal beauty care brand takes into account your stellar identity in deciding your skin care regimen.

"Gems have always been regarded as agents to propitiate good luck and as beauty enhancers. The astro gem facial uses gems corresponding to your date of birth to rejuvenate your skin and to accentuate its complexion," says Anila Joseph, a leading beauty therapist in the city.
Emerald is used for people born between January and March, ruby for those born in April, May and June. While sapphire is for those with birth dates in the months of July, August and September, topaz is the gem for those born in October, November and December.
Procedure
The facial begins with a scrubbing to remove the dead cells followed by a `drainage massage' with a gem-based moisturiser. A galvanic treatment with a mild current is given along with a massage with a roller fastened with gems. "Massage with gems, unlike hand massage, gives an even feel that soothes the client," says Anila. The procedure is repeated on the arms, legs and the back to ensure uniformity of skin texture and colour.
The facial session, stretching over two hours would leave you poorer by Rs.1,750.
Clients
Are there takers for this expensive procedure? "People come to me looking for the best and the latest. They don't mind paying as long as they feel fresh and renewed," maintains Anila. According to her, just a month after its introduction, a dozen clients had chosen this facial. "It is definitely expensive, but is also very relaxing and refreshing. It is good for brides and those in the glamour industry. The effect of the facial is evident after 40 days," says T. Parvathy, television anchor.
Adds Chandra Lakshman, actress, "While other facials just cleanse the skin by removing the dead cells, the astro gem facial has a cooling effect." According to Soja S. Manoj who runs a travel agency, "It was almost like meditating. Fatigue that accumulates owing to my work in the hospitality industry just vanishes."
Concurring with her is Stella Scraphian Mary, an employee with the Railways, "For a working woman, the pressures of managing home and office can be quite demanding. This gets rid of tension and stress."
And you thought people only wear gems.
