FUSION FASHION

Traditional gold jewellery is making way for a variety of inter-cultural designs and attractive purchase schemes

Buyers come from even Mumbai, Chennai and parts of Kerala.

THIS COASTAL city is a happy marriage of cultures that are different from each other, but when it comes to celebrating life they somehow meet in a unique blend. One of the ways in which this union happens is via gold jewellery that people enjoy buying and wearing. Looking even. The three major communities here, Hindus, Muslims, and Christians, and to some extent the Jain community too, are all involved in one common activity: the creation of jewellery using their traditional methods. Interestingly, while the jewellery each community creates may be different, a preference for inter-cultural jewellery, a fusion of different styles, is increasingly becoming popular, says Mohammad Iqbal of Gold Palace.

Mangalore is an important market for gold and diamond jewellery buyers, and in recent times, says Mr. Iqbal, buyers and merchants from various cities including Mumbai, Chennai and parts of Kerala are coming to the city to buy the designs.

Many aspects make the gold jewellery unique here: the jewellery has been made affordable by the gold boutiques; the "cafeteria approach" adopted by them has given buyers an advantage of sorts; and the different gold purchase schemes are as innovative as the designs. These have ensured that Mangalore features on the list of large gold markets in the country.

The chairman of the Chemmannoor Jewellers, George Chemmanoor, points out that ethnic designs in gold too are popular particularly among the new generation whether the designs carry inter-cultural features or not.

In any case, Vimal Shet, a regular buyer, feels the city offers a variety for the discerning buyer of gold thanks to the range of designs and instalment schemes that make purchase of gold tempting and easy.
