THE FIRST Kosmetika 2004 was organised in Hall 14 of Pragati Maidan. The main aim of this exhibition seemed to be publicity, though there was no much of a crowd. Obviously the emphasis was on the business rather than consumer angle. Distributors had come from across India to see the new cosmetic products launched by various companies. Many NRIs had come who were interested in promoting their own brand. The spokesperson of Alpha Cosmetic, which prides itself on being the "finest in nails and lips", said that the range of lipsticks starts from Rs.25 to 50 whereas nail polish prices range from Rs.10 to 35.
A stall of Health Care Products was also installed in which health products were on display as well as for sale. These included an instrument, Twistey, for losing weight and jogging. Magnet, Gastic Ball, Memory Pressure were also available.
Alpha Cosmetics displayed rich perfumes. The range of perfumes was priced between Rs.130 and 475. Shehnaz Hussain Herbal Private Limited marked its presence with among others, an economy jar of Rs.4000. Emami lured customers with lucky draw, assured prizes and free gifts for customers on purchases worth Rs.50 and above. Export enquiries, said the organisers, were coming in from the U.S., West Asia and Africa.
But let's not forget the beautiful mind. Only this approach, or the simple aim of keeping the little ones occupied, could explain the presence of the Modern Book Distributors' stall with books for children. There were also cassettes of general knowledge, fairytales, jokes, yoga, jungle stories. Who said beauty is only skin deep?
