Colourful melange of ideas

Figuration competes with semi-abstracts and abstracts in Kalpana Bhaskar's works
|
ON ENTERING the gallery space, the viewer's eyes wanders around, not knowing where to begin or what to focus on. Working in an assortment of styles, there is the overwhelming feel of the hand of a novice in Kalpana Bhaskar's paintings, especially in terms of colour. In an entirely erratic use of the element of colour, some paintings are evidence of a refined eye, while in other instances, colour has been almost arbitrarily employed.
The themes are as varied as the styles and techniques, creating a melange of works without the synergy to hold them together. Figuration competes with semi-abstracts and abstracts as the paintbrush contends with the palette knife. Many works, however, speak of a strong inclination to design, as seen in some of the paintings from the `Butterflies' series.
Interesting shapes and patterns begin to evolve but there is the need for a more thorough exploration of the theme. Further, a perceptively worked out display allowing consideration for aesthetic relationships among the paintings could possibly have enhanced the works.
The exhibition of paintings by Kalpana Bhaskar is on at DBS Galleria, 31A, Cathedral Garden Road, Kodambakkam High Road, till November 10.
